The work of artist Martha Griffin has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers from Connecticut to Maryland and Delaware. She has received fellowships from the Delaware State Arts Council and a commission from the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, Delaware. She has received awards from competitions in New York City.

Martha Griffin started her art studies in Richmond, VA at Virginia Commonwealth University. After a couple years in Richmond, she moved to New York City where she studied drawing at the Art Students League and then sculpture at the National Academy of Design. In 1978 she realized her dream of studying stone carving in Italy. Martha studied carving in both Carrara and Pietra Santa in various studios. After 2 years studying stone carving in Italy, Martha returned to the USA. She settled in Seaford, Delaware where she established both sculpture and printmaking studios.

These days, the artist works mainly with wood carving. She is doing a series of reliefs in Mahagony. Martha starts a wood carving with a small sketch which she then doubles in size. This final drawing is half the size of the wood carving. She then sculpts a half size model in clay which she casts into plaster. Martha is then ready to begin carving. The artist is also creating a series of color reduction linoleum block prints using her sketches from these wood carvings.

Martha is represented in various galleries on the East Coast and has won many awards including the Individual Artists Fellowship in both the established and emerging categories from the Delaware State Arts Council. She has won the Gold Medal of Honor for Sculpture and the Harriet W. Frishmuth Memorial Award for Traditional Sculpture from the "Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club Annual Juried Exhibitions" in New York City along with many local awards. Martha has also won a commission and produced a bronze for the Schwartz Center for the Arts in Dover, DE.

Martha teaches etching at Anne Arundel Community College in Annapolis, MD.
